BBC News school report was a big success here at Bemrose School.
The students from year 8 worked very hard to produce some excellent news
reports in a short time frame, just like the real thing.

bbc

They produced written reports, audio reports and video reports on many
different stories ranging from school, local, national and international news.

With the help from BBC Radio Derby, teachers and the computer and media guys
the students were able to experience what it is like to produce relevant
news reports appropriate to different audiences in time for them to be put
out "live" via our website to the world!!

The schools reporting was so good that 5 students have been asked to go down to London to the Television Centre to be shown around the centre and attend an awards ceremony hosted by Huw Edwards and Mark Byford. More information and pictures on this will be published soon after the event on May 17th.

Celebrate Success

Author: Mrs. E. Ellison & The Prince's Trust
Date: 20/3/2007

Ya Ya, 16, from Derby, came to the UK unable to speak English and separated from his parents. Disorientated and feeling isolated, he found it very difficult to integrate into a youth culture that bore no resemblance to that of his home country.

space

xl provided the support that Ya Ya needed to help him organise his thoughts and ideas, as well as improve his written and communication skills. Ya Ya flourished and soon was engaged in all of xl's activities; in particular being involved in the highly successful 'Secret Service for Students' – a student-led agony aunt service.

Since then, Ya Ya has been inspirational; he has enrolled at his school's sixth form college and in the meantime puts his skills to good use by working with another xl club member to undertake projects in the community and help others to avoid the pull of being led into trouble.

Bemrose Students Meet BBC Ready Steady Cook Chefs

Author: Ms. J. West
Date: 3/1/2007

In October, during British Food Week, we entered the Pyrex Cooking Challenge. This involved showing how we used British food in our lessons. It was at this time that our school garden was producing lots of fruits and mostly vegetables. Year 9 were shown the garden in several of the lessons, followed by a lesson in making dishes that used produce from the garden. This was recorded and the information was entered in the competition. In early November we were told we had won the East Midlands regional final and were to receive £250 worth of equipment for the school.

A week later we had a phone call from London to inform us we had won the national competition. Six staff and pupils were entertained by Pyrex to an all expenses paid trip to London on Wednesday 6th December. The Hard Rock Café was the location for lunch, followed by a trip to the Hard Rock Cafe Museum. We hailed a taxi, to the London Eye, another taxi, to the BBC studios, where we met one of the judges, Lesley Waters. Afterwards we were part of the audience of Ready Steady Cook which will be shown on Boxing Day. A very memorable day was had by all.

We still have £750 worth of equipment arriving at the school for use in food lessons.

At these 4 events the squad has made excellent progress and improvement, culminating in the squad winning the Derbyshire Orienteering Championship and thus becoming the 2006 Derbyshire Champions. Individual success was also shown at the event with Bemrose runners filling the top 3 positions:-

The squad also had notable success at the British Schools Score Championship with the Junior Boys coming 4th and the Senior Girls winning a podium finish in 3rd place.

The Orienteering Squad has shown great character and dedication over the first year, and due to this the squad has shown great success. Orienteering is a fun and dynamic sport that incorporates running and navigation using a map. From Creative to Commerical - Enterprise Day

Author: Ms. S Ballantyne
Date: 14/9/2006

On June 29th and June 30th the whole school took part in two off timetable Enterprise days. The students and staff were outstanding! Activities ranged from off site visits to on site production of products for sale at our Summer Fair on July 1st.

Year 10 students visited Manchester Airport, Ice Sheffield, Wedgwoods and Coca-Cola to see firsthand how a variety of businesses managed production, marketing and environmental impact.

Year 9 students had a trip to Denby pottery and experienced hands on production of plate painting and some rather charming frogs!

Years 7 and 8 visited an industrial design factory in Mansfield, Making It where they too saw the production process, learned of some of its history and made some battery driven cars.

The army joined us on Friday and put a number of our year 8 boys through some team building exercises..much fun and energy exhibited by all!

Other energetic activities included dance, a Duke of Edinburgh exercise and outdoor challenges that saw a lot of our younger students demonstrate real focus and excellent team work that was a pleasure to see.

The various organisations commented on how well behaved and enthusiastic our students were and I would like to thank students and staff alike for their positive attitude that made the events such a success.

Throughout the two days our Media students filmed a documentary of the activities which is being edited and will be “coming to a screen near you” soon!

In school our year 9 and 10 students took part in a number of Business and Enterprise challenges which developed their financial awareness of profit and loss and encouraged their naturally competitive spirits.

A number of visitors who were judging these activities commented on how talented our students are and praised their innovation and cooperative team working.

In addition some very high quality products were made for our Summer fair including Frisbees, plant pot pets, fridge magnets, fantasy flowers, cards, bookmarks, jewellery, hair scrunchies and delicious cakes and biscuits.

I would like to thank the organisations who joined us on the two days; Bright Futures, Alan Brown, Derby EBP, Cityscape, Derby Dance, Derby Homes, The Army and throughout the week Creative Partnerships working with a group of our year 7 students.

However most of all I would like to say a huge thank you to staff and students alike whose enthusiasm, positive attitude and sheer exuberance made these two days such a wonderful success!

Student Raises Funds for Special Olympics 2007

Author: Mr. F Harlow
Date: 14/9/2006

Current student Ricky Blampied is a very keen gymnast raising funds to enter the 2007 Special Olympics in Shanghai. Ricky is busy raising funds to enter the Special Olympics at the moment arranging events like sponsored walks.

The school is pleased to announce a donation of £500 to help Ricky achieve his goals in the Special Olympics 2007.

Ricky's parents wrote a letter to the school kindly asking for us to involve our students and staff in a fund raising event. The letter read as follows;

Dear Ms. Ward,

As you are aware our son Ricky Blampied is a very keen gymnast he has just returned from a weekend in Birmingham after competing in a competition where he got 7 silver medals, but best of all was selected to represent Great Britain in the October 2007 world games in Shanghai.

To fund his trip Ricky has to do some fund raising either by sponsored event e.g. sponsored walk or another kind of fund raising, would the school be willing to help by possibly doing a none-uniform-day.

We will send more information about the games as we receive it, enclosed is Ricky's letter.

Many Thanks,

Mr. & Mrs. Blampied

The school is pleased to announce a donation of £515.62 to help Ricky attend the Special Olympics in Shanghai next year.
